Holographically Marking the International Year of Light
The United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based technologies, IYL2015. The initiative focuses on the topic of light science, engineering and its applications in energy, education, agriculture and health. Light plays a vital role in our daily lives and is an importan cross-cutting discipline of science and engineering in the 21st century. It has revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.
Holoxica is an active supporter of IYL2015, having taken part in numerous local, national and European events with their digital holographic technology. Holoxica founder, Dr. Javid Khan, wrote a blog article for IYL2015 "Holographic 3D Technology: From Sci-fi Fantasy to Engineering Reality". It looks at the history of holography along with its promises, disappointments and hopes for the future. In particlar, recent developments in digital holography are highlighted as well as emerging motion video technology.
There is currently a proposal for an international "Day of Light" to mark the importance of this technology.
